Avenel is a railway station on the North East railway in the township Avenel, Victoria, Australia. It is served by the Albury-Wodonga V/Line rail service

The station has a single platform located between the broad and standard gauge tracks, facing the eastern side of the broad gauge line. The station is under the care of locals who meet every Friday morning to maintain the station and gardens surrounding the station. The stationeers have also restored the building, including the McKenzie & Holland lever frame.

History

Avenel station opened with the line on 20 November 1872 with a 200 feet (61 m) long platform, temporary station buildings, and a large goods shed. In 1875 the goods shed was destroyed by fire and replaced the next year, while a permanent station building was provided in 1881, this being replaced by the 1970s.[1]

The platform was on a loop siding off the main line,[1] the main line being slewed to the present location during rationalisation of the yard. On 30 May 2008 as part of the North East Rail Revitalisation Project it was announced that the broad gauge line would be converted to standard gauge, and a second platform would be provided on the existing standard gauge line. The project is expected to finish in 2010. The second platform has been completed on the Exsiting standard gauge line in August 2010.[2]
